Mexican and international supporters of the Mayan-led Zapatista movement are returning from the indigenous villages where they spent the past week participating in an initiative known as the Escuelita, or “Little School.“ The purpose of the school was to share insights and methods about the Zapatista’s autonomous government. The Zapatistas sent special invitations to a short list of distinguished guests, among them imprisoned journalist and FSRN commentator, Mumia Abu-Jamal. With assistance from Prison Radio, FSRN spoke to Abu-Jamal this week about the escuelita and the anniversary of the Zapatista’s so-called Good Government Councils.
“Far too often, Norteamericanos, even so-called leftists, adopt a superior, in fact, an imperial attitude, as if we should teach others how to struggle or resist. Instead, experience is the best teacher and in the last decade at least, we’ve seen autonomy sprout into communities rich with equality and the dignity of self-governance, in a word: freedom in Chiapas. And Chiapas is the belly-button of empire in Mexico.”
Zapatista good government councils also administer their own system of basic services, including schools and clinics. While the “Little School” for teaching outsiders about their governance system began this week, the Mayan rebels have been running their own education system independent of government funding for years.
“Education in the empire teaches hegemony, false history, racism and that imperialism is a good thing. The Zapatista communities are relearning the knowledge of the first peoples, so-called indigenous people, and teaching a powerful and subversive way of living in the world, of community, of commonality, of balance with all living things, of respect for Mother Nature. Of course, we get the exact opposite in the Empire. We get isolation, materialism and really war against Mother Nature and the whole world. That’s worthy of learning, that’s worthy of teaching. In the words of that great historian, C.L.R. James, every cook can govern, all of us can learn.”
January first will mark the 20-year-anniversary of the uprising in Chiapas. Abu-Jamal noted that it coincides with the passage of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which the rebels called a “death sentence” for Mexico’s indigenous peoples.
“Both Mexico and the US unleashed the dogs of war, Mexican oligarchs in Chiapas, the US in the Middle East. The imperial forces cannot tolerate any spark of resistance to their ownership of the entire world. The Zapatistas are a thorn in their side and they are growing.”

Mumia Abu-Jamal sobre el aniversario del movimiento zapatista en Chiapas: un legado de educación, libertad y lucha
FREE SPEECH RADIO NEWS (FSRN): Partidarios mexicanos e internacionales del movimiento zapatista encabezado por los mayas están regresando de las comunidades indígenas donde pasaron la semana pasada, participando en una iniciativa conocida como la Escuelita. El propósito de la escuela era compartir ideas y métodos sobre el gobierno autónomo de los zapatistas. Los zapatistas enviaron invitaciones especiales a una corta lista de distinguidos invitados, entre ellos el periodista encarcelado, y también comentarista de FSRN, Mumia Abu-Jamal. Con la ayuda de Prison Radio, FSRN habló con Abu-Jamal esta semana acerca de la escuelita y el aniversario de las Juntas de Buen Gobierno de los zapatistas.
MUMIA ABU-JAMAL: Con demasiada frecuencia, los norteamericanos, incluso los llamados izquierdistas, adoptan una actitud superior, de hecho, una actitud imperial, como si nosotros deberíamos enseñar a los demás cómo luchar y resistir. Por lo contrario, la experiencia es el mejor maestro, y por lo menos en la última década hemos visto brotar la autonomía en comunidades ricas en igualdad y en la dignidad del autogobierno, es decir: la libertad en Chiapas. Y Chiapas es el ombligo del imperio en México.
FSRN: Las Juntas de Buen Gobierno zapatistas también administran su propio sistema de servicios básicos, como escuelas y clínicas. Aunque la Escuelita para enseñar a otras personas su sistema de gobierno comenzó esta semana, los rebeldes mayas han estado implementando su propio sistema educativo independiente del financiamiento del gobierno durante años.
MUMIA: La educación en el imperio enseña la hegemonía, la historia falsa, el racismo y además, insiste en que el imperialismo es algo bueno. Las comunidades zapatistas, por otro lado, están retomando el conocimiento de los pueblos originarios, los pueblos indígenas, y están enseñando una manera poderosa y subversiva de vivir en el mundo, de vivir en comunidad, con propiedad compartida, en equilibrio con todos los seres vivos, con respeto a la Madre Naturaleza. Por supuesto, nos enseñan todo lo contrario en el Imperio ––aislamiento, materialismo y por cierto, guerra contra la Madre Naturaleza y el mundo entero. El camino zapatista es digno de aprender, es digno de enseñar. En las palabras de ese gran historiador, C.L.R. James, “cada cocinero puede gobernar, todos podemos aprender“.
FSRN: El primero de enero marcará el 20 aniversario del levantamiento en Chiapas. Abu-Jamal señala que la fecha coincide con la aprobación del TLCAN, el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte,el que los rebeldes llamaron una „sentencia de muerte“ para los pueblos indígenas de México.
MUMIA: Tanto México como Estados Unidos desataron los perros de la guerra ––la oligarquía mexicana en Chiapas, Estados Unidos en el Medio Oriente. Las fuerzas imperiales no pueden tolerar ninguna chispa de resistencia a su dominio del mundo entero. Los zapatistas no les dan tregua. Y están creciendo.
